Did you know that a product ingredient that is good for sunburns and diaper rash is also good for your teeth? Zinc and oxygen are common elements in nature that are combined and used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, such as a product that relieves tooth pain. The compound, zinc oxide, resists disease, kills bacteria and heals wounds. Remember the beach lifeguard who had a white splotch smeared across the bridge of his nose? And a baby’s tender bum—well, we won’t go there. Those products use zinc oxide.

Your esthetic dental hygienist is an important member of your treatment team. All dental hygienists must undergo a rigorous education and training program. For the esthetic dental hygienists, it is not enough to know the basics, such as cleaning teeth and showing you how to properly brush and floss. Hygienists working in an esthetic dentist office or any dental office that performs smile creation procedures learn more about the new materials and methods of designing smiles.

Yesterday, regrowing a tooth seemed like a sci-fi movie idea. Today it is a reality. Imagine wearing a dental laboratory inside your mouth. Canadian researchers developed a tiny ultrasound device that neatly fits onto a braces bracket or a crown. The device uses sound waves to encourage a tooth’s root to regrow after it has been broken or removed because of an injury, disease or pressure from orthodontics.

When you were a child and your little brother told on you because you pulled a flower out of the garden, you probably called him a “tattletale.”
We have a tattletale in our dental office, too. Our tattletale is an oral care product that exposes the plaque on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky, soft and nearly colorless film of food debris and bacteria that clings to the biting surfaces and grooves of your teeth, the spaces between your teeth and your gum line. If plaque isn’t removed every day, it hardens into tartar. Only a professional cleaning will remove tartar from your teeth.

A common dental issue is a toothache, one symptom indicating you have an infected tooth. A toothache typically is caused by bacteria that have entered your tooth’s pulp chamber either because of decay or a trauma that damaged your tooth.
When you have a toothache, we have treatment options that depend on the severity of the infection.
A minor infection usually responds well to our customary treatment, which is to prescribe an antibiotic to kill the bacteria and perhaps a pain medication to ease your discomfort.
A more serious infection may require root canal therapy. Root canal therapy saves 17 million teeth every year according to the American Association of Endodontists.
An infection may be so severe that the tooth cannot be saved, which means we would extract the tooth. An extraction is used only as a last resort.
The best home treatment to protect your oral health is to regularly brush and floss. Brushing and flossing remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth and teeth. It also helps for you to cut back on eating sugary foods that attract those decay-causing bacteria. Finally, have regular dental check-ups.
When you have a dental problem, our goal is to restore your oral health to 100 percent. Please don't hesitate to call if you are experiencing a dental issue or if it is time for your check-up. We can help your teeth last a lifetime.
